Mission – improve the clinical provider prescribing experience on DoseSpot, and improve patient outcomes by offering greater patient accessibility and affordability with their prescriptions

Background

As the Product lead on DoseSpot’s Upgraded Prescribing application I was responsible for provider experience in the application.

I joined this project in the design and development phase. DoseSpot’s Legacy application looked out of date and had mixed reviews in NPS survey feedback, so company leadership invested in the development of a modern React-based application for our B2B ePrescribing product.

First, I collaborated on initial designs, which were iterated on based on customer interviews and user experience best practices, while maintaining the same core functionality of the Legacy application. Our goal was to update the clinical workflows with UX best practices, while maintaining compliance with the strict regulatory requirements that come with digital prescribing applications.

Additionally, I wrote user stories and implementation requirements. I worked with our developers in refinement/grooming/follow-up sessions, and worked with stakeholders to get sign-off and communicate any updates/changes. Given we were rebuilding our core workflow from the ground up, this involved a lot of back and forth over a months-long timeline, during which I was leading cross-functional alignment on implementation.

After initial launch, we continued to maintain close collaboration with customers to understand how it’s performing and iterate. We’ve continued implementing functionality to enable our providers to complete any core prescribing tasks, have better insight into prescription price transparency, and maintain compliance in a highly regulated industry. Some of these additional features include

  • enabling providers to complete prescription prior authorizations directly within the prescribing application
  • connecting with our patient-facing application so patient’s have the ability to switch their prescription’s pharmacy to a more convenient or cost-effective option
  • direct connections with pharmacies to increase provider and patient visibility into available and affordable prescription options
  • custom-theming options, enabling our clients to change the colors and fonts of our application to go with their branding
  • responsiveness improvements for providers who use the application on mobile/tablet, or smaller windows

As the Product lead I was in charge of making sure the right improvements were prioritized, with a balanced approach towards compliance, provider experience, and business requirements.

Skills Used

  • road mapping with leadership/stakeholders
  • working cross-functionally with go-to-market and other internal teams
  • interviewing users to triage feedback
  • writing user stories & product requirement documents
  • leading Agile refinement/grooming sessions
  • leading prioritization and sprint planning
  • collaborating on design wire frames and mock ups.

Results

DoseSpot’s Upgraded Prescribing application saw up to a 30 second reduction in how long it takes our providers to send a prescription. For clinical providers, this adds up over the days and weeks in which they operate in a clinical setting. Providers have also noted improvements in the smoothness and intuitiveness of the application’s user experience. This was a goal of ours to assist in an industry where burnout is widespread.

Additionally, in collaboration with other internal leaders, our development increased over 15% in sprint velocity through thoughtful improvements to user story creation/refinement, and daily stand-up/blocker resolution processes. This helped us be able to make efficient continued improvements to the application.

Lessons Learned

I learned many great lessons in my time on DoseSpot’s Upgraded Prescribing application including

  • Bringing a product to market in a highly regulated healthcare market
  • Complexities in gathering direct user feedback in the B2B SAAS market from clinical users who are already strapped for time and struggle with burnout
  • Building trusted relationships in implementing application solutions that are manageable for our development teams, intuitive for our healthcare providers in their day-to-day workflows, and seamless enough that they advocate to their teams for purchasing our ePrescribing product
